Differential Higgs distributions as a unique window to New Physics at the LHC

ERC Starting Grant Group of Kerstin Tackmann (2016-2021)

Research Activities

The ERC Starting Grant Group was embedded in the DESY ATLAS group. The group participated in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. We used the dataset that was collected by the ATLAS experiment between 2015 and 2018 to measure differential cross sections to study in detail the properties of the Higgs boson. For these measurements, we used Higgs boson decays into two photons and into four leptons, which can be reconstructed with high efficiency and excellent resolution. The measurements were compared to theoretical predictions, and we performed a measurement of the Higgs boson Yukawa couplings from the differential distributions, and are still completing a search for contributions of effects of physics beyond the Standard Model. As part of these measurements, we contributed to the reconstruction of photons and electrons and the identification of photons at the ATLAS experiment.

Excellent candidates interested in Bachelor, Masters or PhD theses are welcome to contact me any time.

We contributed to

We contributed to

  • Differential cross section measurements in Higgs decays into two photons.
  • Differential cross section measurements in Higgs decays into four leptons, working together with Sarah Heim's YIG
  • Combination of the results in the two-photon and the four-lepton decay.
  • Comparison of the measured distributions with theoretical predictions.
  • Extraction of constraints on Yukawa couplings from Higgs transverse momentum spectrum.
  • Extraction of constraints on potential new heavy particles and interactions from Higgs transverse momentum spectrum (ongoing).
  • Electron and photon reconstruction and software.
  • Photon identification efficiency measurements.
  • Correction of electron and photon electromagnetic shower shapes in simulation.
