Research Activities

The Young Investigator's Group is situated at DESY and is embedded in the ATLAS group there. It is also closely linked to the University of Hamburg. The group participates in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. We are focusing on photon-related activities in the ATLAS experiment, and in particular on Higgs boson decays into two photons, and on activities around the current and future silicon microstrip detector.

Higgs Studies

Silicon Microstrip Detector

We contributed to several aspects of photon and Higgs studies, ranging from the reconstruction to Higgs studies.

We contributed to

  • Converted photon reconstruction. Photons converting in the material of the tracking detectors make up for a sizable fraction of photons and are reconstructed using the tracker and the calorimeter.
  • Inner Detector material studies. A precise understanding the material budget of the tracking detectors is needed for the reconstruction of charged particles and electromagnetic objects. Photon conversions in the detector material can be used to study the material distribution.
  • Photon identification and efficiency measurements. The photon idenfitifcation is based on shower shapes in the calorimeter, and needs to be adapted to the expected pileup conditions. Making use of the a clean electron sample selected from Z decays and the similarity of the electromagnetic showers of electrons and photons, the photon identification efficiency can be extrapolated from electrons.
  • Higgs decays into two photons. The diphoton decay channel contributed significantly to the discovery of the new particle in summer 2012. After the discovery, we contributed to the detailed study of the properties of the new particle, in particular its production at the LHC, and the measurements of the production and decay kinematics.
  • We also searched for possible Higgs decays into four photons and narrow diphoton resonances in a wider mass range from 60 to 650 GeV.

  • Differential cross sections in SM diphoton events, also including jets.
  • Operation of the ATLAS SCT. Online monitoring the detector, and control room shifts.
  • Simulation of radiation damage in the ATLAS SCT. The tracking detectors are accumulating radiation damage, which eventually will need to be accounted for in the simulation of the detector.
  • Lorentz angle in irradiated sensors. One effect of radiation damage is a change in the Lorentz angle of the sensor. This can be studied in a dedicated test beam setup at DESY.
  • Qualification of radiation tolerance high-voltage multiplexers for the upgrade of the silicon microstrip detector.
  • Micro-channel cooling. Micro-channel cooling could offer a possibility to significantly reduce the material budget of the future silicon microstrip detector and is studied in a test setup at DESY.
